Spinning Poi Dance Class |
Learn to Dance with Fire ! | ||
Home Page Contact Us What is Poi? Brief History of Poi Poi has been around for hundreds of years. It is believed to have originated in New Zealand with the Maori people and is still used in their tribal celebrations (Haka Poi). The Poi is a Maori word which means ball on a string, swung around the body. It is pronounced like toy but with a P. The beginning level class will break down the foundational moves that are necessary for a strong Poi repertoire. Unlike some instructors, teacher LeRina will not try to teach fancy moves too quickly. Rather, she wants to make sure the student has the most important moves down for performance (such as turning) before introducing more complicated tricks. Students will have the opportunity to perform at the Winter Dance Recital in December. Students are not required to perform, but are encouraged to do so. With time and practice, the necessary foundations will have been laid for the student to advance to more difficult material and perhaps, if they have the passion . To dance with Fire! |
